Meet She Tells the Story.
This energy has a voice, and the voice says “I believe.” Not “I think.” Not “I know.” I believe. And what usually follows that phrase is a story. An adventure. Something she lived, or something she heard, being handed to you at exactly the right moment.
Here’s what this energy does better than almost anyone else in the room. She doesn’t just tell you a fact and leave it there. Instead, she hands you a story, because a story is what moves people. You can tell someone the point you’re trying to make, or you can tell them the story that makes the point land in their chest instead of just their head.
I think about the person who says, “This happened the other day, and I honestly couldn’t believe it,” and by the time she’s done telling it, you’re not just informed. You’re inspired. You’re seeing a new possibility for your own life because of the story she just handed you.
That’s She Tells the Story energy. The one who supports you by handing you the exact story you needed to hear, not just by handing you advice.
This energy can also get a little restless. It’s stimulated by new experiences, new places, new ideas. It wants movement. And when that need for stimulation isn’t being fed, or when the stories being told start pulling people down instead of lifting them up, this energy loses its shine. It gets scattered. Repetitive. It starts telling the same story so many times that the point gets lost inside it.
The She Tells the Stories energy is big in me. It didn’t matter what class I was teaching, accounting, economics, finance, management, marketing, or business communication, I taught the concepts through stories.
At the time, I had no idea there was even such a thing as a tell-the-stories energy. I taught that way because stories are how I remember and make sense of things, and I wanted to do the same thing for my students. Give them a way to remember the concepts, because remembering is a big step in learning.
This energy is moving through all of us right now. But some of us carry it all the time, the ones who use a story to help people understand what they’re talking about. The ones who make people lean in.
