The Adventure Seeker: In Everyday Life

Curiosity trumps what's next. Every time.

Here you go!

Curiosity trumps what’s next. Every time.

So we’ve talked about the general feeling of The Adventure Seeker energy. We’ve talked about Miss Cranky Pants energy and the repeating pattern, that exhausting loop of new thing, same lesson, different costume. Today, let’s chat about what happens when this energy finds its footing.

The word for it is curiosity. Genuine, present-tense, I-really-want-to-know-what-this-experience-has-to-offer curiosity. It sounds simple, but it is genuinely different from the restlessness we talked about yesterday.

Restlessness says, “Get me out of here! This is getting uncomfortable, and I want to move on.” Curiosity says I wonder what else is in here that I haven’t found yet. If we had music playing in the background, “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” by U2 would be the perfect theme song for The Adventure Seeker.

In everyday life, the Adventure Seeker energy looks like someone who can walk into any room and find common ground with almost anyone in it. Why? Because when you have genuinely been curious about all different kinds of experiences, you carry an amazing range inside you. You have touched enough versions of what a life can look like that you can meet people where they are.

I’ve got a friend who is this way. He’s nearly 80 years old, a retired finance professor with two PhDs. He regularly travels to France and Italy, staying in each country for about six weeks at a time, never with it fully planned out. He always stops by to see us whenever he’s getting ready to leave town again and fills us in on his adventures when he comes back to town. He can talk to anyone about anything because he’s always genuinely interested in experiencing something new.

I have a client who is full of Adventure Seeker energy. She has had, I kid you not, six different careers. When she first told me about her path, she braced herself, like she was waiting for me to tell her to pick one and stick to it. Instead, I said, “You’re one of the most interesting people I have talked to.” Because she had genuinely been immersed in all of it. She didn’t just bounce around. She collected something real from every experience.

That’s The Adventure Seeker in everyday life. The range is not the problem. The range is the whole gift.

This energy also looks like staying with something long enough to extract the full lesson. Not the surface one. The real one. The one that takes a little longer to find because it lives underneath the first impression.

There is a simple question that helps you know you are in the healthy version of this energy.

Am I moving because I have genuinely received what this has to offer, or am I moving because it got uncomfortable and the exit sign looks attractive?

Only you know the honest answer to that. But when The Adventure Seeker energy is working, you will know the difference. And that knowing? That is the whole thing.

Next time, we’ll talk about what this energy looks like at its absolute fullest expression. The Inner Saint version. The one that, honestly, takes my breath away a little.

Don’t miss it.

Find your happy. Love what you do. Make a difference. Come back to me safely. See ya!
