I once had a coaching client who was tangled up in confusion about a breakup. Not the facts of what happened. What it meant. I had him write a letter as her, in her voice. Let her say what she’d say. What he wanted to hear from her.
He wrote it. And what surprised him wasn’t what he wrote. He was surprised by what he left out. He didn’t write an apology from her, because he knew she’d never apologize to him for what she did. That single thing told him more about her character than any explanation or guidance I could’ve given him.
He didn’t get an answer that day. He got clarity. Slowly, over the following weeks, the confusion started to settle into something he could move forward with.
