The difference between busy and focused is five minutes of stillness.
In our last chat, we met the Cranky Pants energy in “The Most Productive Thing You Can Do Right Now Might Be to Stop.” The scattered version and the frozen version. Today, we talk about what this energy looks like when it’s working.
In everyday life, this energy shows up as a real difference between busy and focused.
You may have entire days that feel productive on paper. Full of tasks, things checked off, a lot of movement. And you still end them with that same antsy, unsettled feeling. That’s usually a sign that you spent the day doing instead of deciding. The energy went somewhere, just not somewhere that really mattered.
I know this feeling well. I can fill a day with tasks that feel urgent and look productive and still end the day wondering why I feel so flat. That flat feeling is the signal. It is this energy telling me that I spent the day busy instead of focused. And some of us tend to be great at busy because we avoid the things we’re not so fond of doing.
The flip side is what happens when you do stop. When you sit still for a few minutes, even a bad few minutes, even an uncomfortable one, something in you starts to sort itself out. You get clear on what really deserves your attention. And once you know, you can focus on it with an intensity that is impressive.
Last week, I had a morning where I sat down to work and felt that scattered, antsy, where-do-I-even-start feeling. Instead of just starting something to outrun it, I made myself stop. I sat with the discomfort for maybe five minutes. And then, pretty clearly, I knew exactly what needed my attention first. And I did that thing for three hours without looking up.
That is this energy working the way it is designed to. The five minutes of stillness wasn’t lost time. It was the thing that made the three hours possible.
I find that meditating helps me hone in on what I should do next. I don’t sit still well, so I do Kundalini Yoga, which combines physical movement and meditation. Finding Kundalini was like finding the magic that helps me find my stillness.
In everyday life, we also need to be honest about what a productive day actually feels like for you versus what it looks like on paper. If your most focused days don’t always have the longest to-do lists, that’s not a failure. That is “The Most Productive Thing You Can Do Right Now Might Be to Stop” energy doing exactly what it should.
The world treats stillness like wasted time. But when you have consistent access to this energy, stillness is often the step that makes it possible to get things done.
In our next chat, we talk about what this energy looks like at its absolute fullest expression. The Inner Saint version. Our best self.
I wouldn’t miss it. I hope you don’t!
Find your happy. Love what you do. Make a difference. Come back to me safely. See ya!
