The Guiding Visionary doesn’t need credit for where the idea came from. When this energy is fully lived, your leadership becomes something people experience without always being able to name it. You’re the reason things come together. You’re the reason the group found its direction. You’re the reason the project landed somewhere worth landing. And you’re at peace with the fact that not everyone in the room knows that.
This is leadership in service of something larger than yourself. It’s about caring where things are going, not about power, or recognition, or being seen as the one in charge. It’s about having the vision and patience to help get them there.
I taught college for fifteen years. I never did it for the thank yous. But one of my greatest pleasures is still when my former students reach out and let me know what a difference I made for them. This tends to happen after they’ve been promoted or made a significant change in their lives. I’ll get an email, sometimes years after they sat in my classroom. Over the years, the messages have had a common thread. “I still hear your voice guiding me along.” “I was able to get here, to this point, because of your guidance along the way.” “I was able to do this because of what you taught me.”
